What affects the price of a new furnace
- Efficiency. A 96% furnace burns less gas every winter than an 80% model but costs more up front. It also vents through PVC pipe instead of a chimney or metal flue.
- Blower and burner type. Two-stage and variable-speed furnaces run quieter and heat more evenly than single-stage models, and they cost more.
- Size. A furnace has to be sized to your home. Bigger isn’t better: an oversized furnace turns on and off too often and wears out sooner.
- Venting, gas line and ductwork. Switching from a chimney-vented furnace to a high-efficiency one means new venting, and some homes need gas-line or duct changes.
- Replacing the AC too. The furnace blower and the AC coil work as one system, so many homeowners replace both together.
Repair or replace?
If your furnace is 15 to 20 years old or more, needs frequent repairs, has a cracked heat exchanger, or your gas bills keep climbing, replacement is usually the better investment.
