What affects the cost of a new boiler
- Type of boiler. A cast iron boiler is the lower-cost choice. A high-efficiency condensing boiler costs more up front but uses less gas every winter. A combi boiler also replaces your water heater.
- Steam or hot water. Steam systems need more work around the boiler, so they usually cost more to replace than hot-water systems.
- Zones. Each heating zone needs its own controls and valves or pumps, so more zones means more cost.
- Venting and chimney. High-efficiency boilers vent through PVC pipe. Older boilers that vent through a chimney may need a liner.
- Fuel. Converting an oil boiler to natural gas adds gas-line and venting work.
Repair or replace?
If your boiler is over 15 years old and needs a major repair, replacement is usually the better investment, especially if repairs keep coming back or the boiler itself is leaking or rusting. A younger boiler with one failed part is usually worth repairing. We’ll give you both options in writing. A service call is $110, or $175 after hours, and covers the trip to your home. Diagnostic work and any repairs are added on top, and you approve the price before we start. Members of our ESA maintenance plan pay $0 for service calls.
